DAY 149

Various photos taken with the Ikimono from a relaxed day that turned out quite epic and adventurous. Jeff wanted to go on a hike so I found one that was in Malibu. Unfortunately, traffic was ridiculous because it's Memorial Day weekend, so we turned off on a side road heading north into the mountains. I think it was called Temescal Canyon (or was it Topanga Canyon?). I remembered the road from before, when I had driven down it in a bus for fieldwork this Fall. We drove through a little town that looked like a Western town from way out in the boonies and stopped at the decrepit general store for some iced tea. On the walk back to the car, we kept getting hit the head by flying ladybugs. The air was filled with thousands of them and you could hear a faint buzzing in the background from the combined sound of all of their wings.

The actual hike we ended up going on turned out to be pretty anticlimactic (it advertised "falls," we saw a creek) but it still felt nice to be outside. I might have gotten a little suntanned. I did find a new freckle on the back of my hand. On the way back on PCH (I love calling it that) I turned off to the side and suggested we put our feet in the water. I really can't go to the beach without touching the water! It was ice cold but it felt nice on my feet after the hike. I can't wait to see how today's pictures turn out!

I forgot how much happened this day (which is why I love doing photo-of-the-day - I remember things I would have forgotten about, and remember that I really don't live a dull life). First that day, I picked Jeff up from his apartment, which is across from the cemetery:

We drove up PCH (I still love that name) looking for a hike I had read about, but the traffic made us impatient so we turned down a road that I thought I had been down before. It turned out that I was wrong, but we decided to continue exploring. We entered a little mountain-y town. Bizarre. We stopped at a convenience store for cold beverages and a bathroom break. The ground outside the portapotty was littered with old homework and textbooks:

We continued driving up the road, looking for another hike. We passed concrete ruins that someone had painted to look like a shrine surrounding a buddha:

We found a hike:

On the way back, we saw a squirrel that had been run over with its intestines strewed out next to it on the concrete. Fascinating, but it made me want to puke:

On the drive back, we impulsively pulled over and walked down onto the beach and put our feet in the waves. Some Mexican kids were actually swimming in the water even though it was freezing:

DAY 148

First photos taken from onsite the internship! Either a shot from the office window, or Piglet the dog.

Or both! This is what it looks outside the window: an alleyway full of chairs.

And Piglet, who turned out to be quite photogenic.

DAY 147

Today's photo was taken with the fisheye (again, I gotta finish up this roll!) and is of Ackerman Grand Ballroom in the afternoon from a view through a window in the front entrance door.

Where did this photo go? I think I accidentally wiped it out, along with DAY 107.

DAY 146

I am so antsy. I want to get these photos developed NOW!

Anyway, there are three photos of the day today, all taken with the fisheye. First is Charles sleeping on the CEC couch. Second is Hanna on the patio where we held interviews. Third is Megan also sleeping on the CEC couch.

For some reason, only the one of Charles came out:

DAY 144

In a valiant effort to finish all the rolls of film I am currently in the midst of, I took a picture of Gwen and Laraine's hair from the ground using the fisheye.

DAY 142

Today was definitely the best Saturday of the quarter, if not the entire year! I slept in till 10am, then went with Laraine to the Silverlake Jubilee, where we saw a lot of hipsters, babies, and dogs. We got a ton of free stuff, including a tube of chapstick from Yelp and a bag of free food, laundry detergent, and cat treats. I also ate from food truck for the first time and drank a can of something called Rice Punch, which tasted like the Asian version of horchata. On the way to the jubilee, Laraine and I pulled over to a local farmer's market. I bought jalapeƱos and a potato for cheap, then I haggled in Spanish (this is what my minor is good for) to get a better price on the two dresses that Laraine and I bought. In looking for parking, we ended up driving a lot around Silverlake and discovered that it is awesome. Gorgeous views of the Griffith and the Hollywood hills! Crazy houses! Insane hills! It's like a nicer, Southern California edition of Belmont. Afterwards, we came back and I went to the Jane Austen Ball at Powell with Jackie. We got super dressed up and learned old dances. We also got told off by the instructor for making too many jokes and laughing too much, but I can't be serious because I'm such a horrible dancer! Now I'm back and ready for a long day of homework tomorrow.

Today's photos were all taken with the $3 and depict today's epicness.

DAY 141

I have been such a bad roommate this week. I didn't help clean the house before Jenna's birthday, I forgot to take out the trash until today, and I left my dirty dishes out all week (I forgot to put the peas I cooked away and they turned all bubbly and and furry and started to release noxious gases). This is the bottom of a pot of spaghetti that I forgot to wash:

DAY 140

Today's photo is of Laraine with a towel on her head and Q-tips in her ears. She looks like an alien. Taken with the $3, film to hopefully be developed this weekend!

DAY 139

The Clothesline Project is back at UCLA. Thanks to Jeffries for the heads-up!

DAY 138

The process:

My hands are still slightly blue. I don't mind. It reminds me of when I did oil painting in high school and my knuckles and palms were always covered in brush marks. I'm not really sure why, but it made me feel proud to look down and see paint on my hands. Maybe because it's proof that I'd done something with them.

DAY 137

Today's photo of the day is a sideview of Dougal's new haircut, taken with the $3. (This is getting really boring. I need to hurry up with getting those photos developed.)

Sunday, May 16, 2010

DAY 136

This is Ariana, soaking her ear in a bowl of hot salt water because she just got this insane piercing. She's visiting for the weekend to rescue us from the post-midterm, mid-quarter slump that we're currently in the middle of. You may remember her as the pair of hands from DAY 001!

Saturday, May 15, 2010

DAY 135

Today's photos of the day are from the Jello War, and were taken with the $3. :)

DAY 133

For today's picture, I convinced Jackie to model for me. She was dressed to the nines, with pink glitter flats, a strapless zippered denim dress, and coordinating lavender jewelry. I love how dressed up she is for class - if you've got the clothes, then wear them! I love when people wear what they want and don't give a shit about what other people think. Life should be glamorous like that.

DAY 129

On the one day that Lisa and I plan to go to the beach, the weather turns cold. So, instead, we laid around on the sand and attempted to get more tan/blond (no progress to report). With the fisheye, I took a picture of the seagulls flying away as I ran into a cluster of them.

Saturday, May 8, 2010

DAY 128

Surprisingly good day for a weekend I didn't pre-plan for too much - brunch (I got swiped in for the fourth time this week, thanks to Mala!), new shoes, the Velaslavasay Panorama, and finally a free Les Savy Fav concert at the Getty! I only took my camera to the Panorama (does that rhyme?) because I knew I wasn't going to want to take pictures during the concert. At first, Jacqueline and I were underwhelmed by the Panorama but then we went in a second time and it grew on us. It's a weird exhibit - you're in this little circular room which is painted to look like a landscape (in this case the North Pole) and there are sound recordings playing and lights changing around you so it feels like you're actually in a different place. It would have been more pleasant if we had known what to expect, but I'm glad we went because now I know what to expect.

DAY 127

Confession: I love cutting up raw meat with my bare hands. Or cutting up or mixing up or rolling up anything with my hands, really. I never realized how tactile cooking is. Have you ever felt raw bread dough? It's incredibly soft - it feels like skin. I don't blame Laraine at all for her obsession.

Thursday, May 6, 2010

DAY 126

I took a lot of pictures today, all of them with the $3. It started off with post-midnight cinco de mayo festivities (I ended up taking 12 photos somehow!) and then, forgetting that I already had multiple photos for that day, I took two more during the day. One of the white chairs lined up in the Perloff sunken gardens and one of Ackerman Grand Ballroom with the shades open.

I'm only posting this one from the night, since the rest of them turned out looking like the kind of photos you could blackmail people with. This is when we were riding in Megan's car to Denny's, singing along to Edward Sharpe's "Home" and I remember it feeling quite epic. We fit five drunk people and one sober driver into that little car.

Wednesday, May 5, 2010

DAY 125

I ran into the Nick-whose-last-name-I-don't-know-because-he-doesn't-have-a-facebook at Ralphs. He was about to buy a bunch of bananas (apparently his apartment is addicted to them), and I thought he looked kind of silly carrying all these bananas and a scooter helmet so I took a picture.

DAY 124

DLV chillin' outside, avoiding studying:

Monday, May 3, 2010

DAY 123

World's ugliest potatoes: I forgot about them for four months, then I decided to keep them to see how many fingers they would grow.

Sunday, May 2, 2010

DAY 122

Westwood is inexplicable. Where did these snowboard boots come from and why are they just sitting here?

Also, today is DAY 122, meaning that we're 1/3 of the way done!

DAY 121

I'm sorry for all the film photos. I've been going a lot of places where I don't want to lug around a big camera, but I really just need to do it! A photo blog isn't exciting if there's nothing to look at.

Anyway, today's photo is of Kim Kandel at sunset before we walked to the Portugal. The Man concert, taken with the Ikimono!

Glamorous, no?
